August is always a month for summer holiday, taking a break, having some family time or a retreat for some searching.

We did not have the Chapter Meeting yesterday. However, I still went to the usual meeting place, ordered a Jasmine Green tea, be still there for some reflection about the IAC HK Chapter.

Different walks of people have been attracted to the meeting: people did not know and want to start learning coaching; people who has justed conmpleted a coaching course from HKU SPACE, CoachU, Tony Robins, WABC course; experienced trainers, consultants and coaches.

I like the atmosphere because there are respect, trust, curiousity, contribution, serving heart, ideas, forward moving and love.

Since 2008, so far there were 3 Chinese coaches have attempted the IAC certification and 1 got certified while the other two are very close. It matches the passing rate of 25% compare with the world attempt. I foresee there will more Test 2 attempts in end of 2010. I am looking forward to see the 2nd and 3rd certified coach to be born.

The most amazing project we have done was co-authoring a Chinese coaching book. It is at the finalizing stage. We want to see the published book in the 2011 IAC Coaching Conference in Taiwan.

I want to see more coaches can find their good projects in both executive and life coaching. I personally feel the executive coaching field is in lack of certified coaches. I want to create a course for some local coaches to demonstrate to them what is and how to do executive coaching through the sharing of my real experience.

Living the Masteries is a regular column where we invite coaches to share their experiences of Living the Masteries in their everyday lives. As we become aware of the Masteries and really understand them, they become like old friends. We bump into them in unexpected ways and in unusual places, just as this month's story from Bonnie Chan, IAC-CC illustrates.

Tea Time
by Bonnie Chan, IAC-CC

When I was studying in Japan in the 1980s, "ichi-go ichi-e" was one of my favorite Japanese sayings. 一期一会 literally translates to "one time, one meeting," or the reminder to "treasure every meeting, for it will never reoccur." Since then, I have practised this philosophy in my daily life by treasuring whoever I meet and each special moment.

The term is derived from Zen Buddhism and its concepts of transience, and it is particularly associated with the Japanese tea ceremony. In the context of a tea ceremony, ichi-go Ichi-e reminds participants that each tea meeting--each moment--is precious and should be treated with the utmost sincerity and respect.

When I encountered the IAC Coaching Masteries® in 2006, I was thrilled to see Mastery #4, Processing in the Present. The first line of its definition is "The coach is attentive to the client, processing information at the level of mind, body, heart and/or spirit..." It reminds me of the concept of "living life to the fullest for all we have is today" in the ichi-go ichi-e.

On the special day of 18th March in Shanghai (preceding the IAC's first International Coaching Conference), Natalie Tucker Miller and I had planned to attend coach Bronwyn Bowery-Ireland's book launch party for her new book entitled "This vs. That." We had 30 minutes to spare before the party started, so we went into a tea shop to browse for a while. A man of about 40, who we believed was the shop owner, came forward, inviting us to sit down and taste some tea.

Although Natalie does not speak Chinese at all, he kept right on speaking to her. I was worried about them not understanding each other, so I jumped into their conversation with the intention of interpreting a little. In those moments, I noticed something very special: when you are totally present (which they were), fears or worries disappear and it's as though the ability to communicate verbally doesn't matter as much.

Before we took each sip of tea, we smelled it and paused to let it process into our olfactory system. The aroma of the tea synchronizes our senses, mind and soul, preparing to nurture us. Both the temperature and the taste were perfect. The man expanded our awareness of how to experience what the tea had to offer us. Natalie and I looked at each other thinking the same thing--are we experiencing Mastery #4? This man is indeed a good coach!

She enjoys bringing the IAC Masteries into her daily life, and is an inspirational teacher, helping coaches to experience and learn the Masteries.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bonnie's touching story illustrates how each moment is precious and deserves to be treated with sincerity, heartfulness and respect. This also applies to each moment of a coaching session. The coach (in this case the man in the tea room) encouraged his clients to experience the tea ceremony in the present moment, unencumbered by past or future concerns or even language.

It was important to allow their bodies to appreciate the nurturing qualities of the tea, their minds to experience the calming experience of taking time to be with the tea, their hearts to connect in the sharing of the tea and their spirits to soar as they took it all in. Mastery #4 awakens us to the importance of being present on those four different levels--mind, body, heart and spirit.

Bonnie highlighted the fact that when you are totally present in a situation, fears and worries disappear. This is a helpful message to both coaches and clients to just relax, be in the moment and trust the process--this is when miracles occur.

This is your column, it can only continue if you share your experiences of Living the Masteries. Yoram was an active member of the Strategy Committee, and Bonnie had graciously continued on the BOG past the end of her term in order to support the translation of the Masteries as well as many other projects. Bonnie has a big vision of coaching, especially in terms of the positive difference it can make in her home country, China. Since joining the IAC Board of Governors in 2007, Bonnie has made a huge contribution through her energy, initiative, creativity and focus. She has been instrumental in many projects, although she is always very modest about her contributions. She created systems and teams to deliver quality translations of the Masteries and the online exam into key languages. She formed leadership teams for several IAC Chapters in Asia and built supportive connections between them. She was the vision and driving force behind the IAC's first conference held in Shanghai earlier this year. She continues to contribute to the IAC Certification Board, especially in their efforts to bring the benefits of certification to different language groups.

Hosted by the IAC Shanghai Chapter, the event took place on Friday, 19 March 2010 at the Grand Mercure Hotel.

Most were from Shanghai, in addition to attendees from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and Japan. Out of the discussion, some insights emerged regarding coaching Chinese people in China. Culturally, coaching is from the US. When putting coaching into the context of Chinese society, it is worthwhile to note a couple of things. First of all, building rapport and trust may take a few sessions before a Chinese client opens up. Further, Chinese people are non-confrontational; they do not open up when challenged.

With regard to corporate clients in China, they would evaluate a coach in terms of their qualification, their integrity and their passion as a coach.

How important is it to get a professional coaching certification? The answer depends on who you speak with.

A 2009 Harvard Business Review survey of 140 leading coaches found opinion evenly split on the importance of getting certified, with 29.2 percent finding it "very necessary," while 28.5 percent found it "not necessary at all."

But there's a growing consensus among coaches that training and accreditation will only increase in importance as the field matures--especially in the field of executive coaching.

About 76 percent of corporate human resources professionals and coaching clients said that formal training and certification is either "very important" or "absolutely essential," up from 62 percent three years ago, according to the Sherpa Executive Coaching Survey, now in its fifth year. Only about 10 percent of clients said certification is "not necessary."

Natalie Tucker Miller, lead certifier for the International Association of Coaching, and Dean of Students at the School of Coaching Mastery, acknowledged that some veteran coaches have been able to flourish without certification. But for new entrants to the field, certification is becoming essential. The real benefit, she argues, is that certification "encourages coaching mastery."

"It's about high standards," Miller says. "Anyone can call themselves a coach right now. There are many people out there that are not coaching-they are just giving people advice. You can go to your grandmother for that. People don't want advice. If coaching is really going to be the catalyst for personal transformation - which is what coaching is really about - then standards need to be high regardless of certification."

So where to look for the certification and coaching mastery?

The options can seem overwhelming: there are literally hundreds of coaching schools and scores of different certifications. Requirements and tuitions differ widely.

The International Coach Federation (ICF), is one place to start. About 20 percent of HR professionals in the Sherpa Executive Coaching Survey who had a preference on coaching certifications put ICF certification at the top of their list (about equal with university-based training). And ICF-certified programs are by far the most favored certification route for life coaches themselves, according to the Sherpa study. About 44 percent of executive coaches prefer it to all other programs.

With 16,600 members, the ICF offers a web portal to schools it has accredited to teach core areas of coaching mastery, which coaches are also required to learn before obtaining an ICF credential.

Among the areas those accredited schools must cover:
• ethics and professional standards
• establishing trust and intimacy with a client
• active listening
• powerful questioning
• creating awareness
• planning and goal setting
• managing progress
• accountability

Ann Jarvis, ICF's marketing manager, estimates that the tuition of ICF-certified schools range from $4,000 to $11,000 (depending on whether the programs are remote or face to face) and on their length. Some programs run up to two years, while others are condensed.

Once a student completes a course, they can apply for one of the three different types of ICF credentials to signify various levels of coaching mastery, ranging from 100 coaching hours and eight clients for the Associate Certified Coach, to 2500 hours and 35 clients for a Masters Certified Coach.

The International Association of Coaching (IAC) , offers an alternative credential with more flexibility. It uses two measures to assess whether or not coaches meet their standards, an online exam and two 30-minute recordings of the applicant coaching two different clients that clearly demonstrate their skills.

"Since coaching itself celebrates innovation and change," Angela Spaxman, IAC's immediate past president, explains, "it is very appropriate for coaching associations to use progressive certifications that take a fresh look at the purpose of certification."

Though IAC's standards mirror ICF's MCC level, the certification can be obtained quicker, since there is no requirement for coaching hours, Spaxman says.

IAC may have another advantage: price.

The certification fees are $35 for Part 1 and $350 for Part 2, plus annual membership fees of $129. Spaxman says it's "possible for an experienced person with a clear idea of what coaching is and with very strong coaching communication skills, to pass the certification with a few months of part-time effort."

"However, most people take many years to learn to perform coaching to the required standard," she adds.

For those who choose to forgo or supplement ICF or IAC certifications with educational credentials, there are plenty of coaching schools available.
