I orginally wanted to invite an IAC member who has experienced the new 9 Masteries Test 1 to sharing about the experience. However, the schedule seems not matching so I will put this idea in the later session of this year.
So far we have been using the meetings to assisting coaches in understanding the 9 Masteries, in particular for them to prepare for the IAC Certification Tests. I have an idea to use the upcoming session to go for a round table game. Here we are and please come and enjoy:

Why would a person choose group coaching instead of individual attention? Bonnie Chan, an executive and business coach at Coach Lite, said group coaching was for someone looking for collective wisdom.
This was especially suitable when the desired improvement was organisational, not personal, and when performance outcome was dependent on more than one person, such as collaborative work in a company, community or charity purpose.
According to Ms Chan, group coaching is a better method for achieving performance and realising an organisation's mission.
Companies or organisations are the biggest client base for group coaching. Sometimes, they can comprise colleagues from one office or from different branches across regions, participating in one or two 90-minute sessions a month for up to three months.
Ms Chan said, in many cases, group coaching was employed to address interdepartmental conflicts in organisations and remedy the problem. "This gets department managers to co-operate and understand what the other is doing," she said. "Also, throughout group coaching, we can point out blind spots, look at communication skills, attitudes and examine documents from their own perspective and that of each other."
Mentor coaching is another form of group coaching, whereby experienced coaches teach trainee coaches working towards certification. Ms Chan said it was a chance to share their experiences in a relaxed and supportive setting.
While she said group coaching was a relatively new concept in Hong Kong, people interested could opt for this form of self-help instead of more costly individual coaching, which usually costs from HK$2,500 to HK$3,500 per hour. Rates for group coaching tend to be 20 per cent higher, but the cost is typically divided between the participants, or paid by the company.

Since we have moved the meeting venue to the Pacific Coffee, we have less attendants. Nevertheless, it did not affect the quality of the Chapter meeting as coaches who attended felt fulfilled and inspired.
Coach L. said, "The session was full of inter-action and intra-stimulation. I was evoked to articulate The Meaning and Value of Code of Ethics towards every practising coach. It should be the first lesson to learn before any coaching skill "
Coach B. added that "Code of Ethics is not usually taught in any coaching course in Hong Kong. However, this session has highlighted The Importance and Essential of coaching ethics for every coaches for upholding their professional identification as a principle to provide valuable services towards the clients."
We have shared:
1. Where the law of the country in which the coach practices differs from the IAC Ethical Principles....
2. If the client brings up an issue that the coach thinks may be with a therapeutic concern......
3. How to resolve conflicts with coaching clients ......
We are very sorry to inform you that the Jul IAC HK Chapter Meeting should be on Jul 8 (as usual on the second Tuesday of each month). Jul 15 was the typo. We sincerely apologise for the mistake and may have confused your schedule. Sorry again.
Coaching has been appreciated for its effectiveness in corporation performance and culture building in Hong Kong. Moreover, Coaching is also becoming one the eye-catching or trendy learnings for elites in China in value-adding to their career. Thus, there is a concern of what is "Correct Coaching" as mentioned by Donna in her article on "Everything to become a successful coach."
I found in fact the fundamental coaching phiolosophy is very straight forward. However, there are many different way of expression through different coaching models used by different coaching schools or coaches. They all works well lively only through a masterful coach who has high integraty and professional ethics.
Coaching is not only a skill, it is a phiolosophy of life and work application. Coaching relationship involves an interactive relationship development. Once Coach Katherine said, "Coaching is a form of mature and professional loving towards the client and seeing he/she to be successful in his/her live."
I, therefore, would like to use the next chapter meeting for discussing case study on code of ethics for coaches and why it is important as an essential element to be a successful masterful coach.
Come and join us. It is not a boring topic but something essential.

We simulate being a masterful coach is very similar to a masterful Tai Jei guru. When a guru plays Tai jei, he does not need to count each step according to the text book, he plays as the flow is in which he integrates all the technique and subtle movements skillfully and mindfully in that particular unique moment.
Bonnie encourages members to drill each mastery one by one. Moreoever, it is also important to drill few masteries together to seeing how they enhance the empowerment for the client.
In the Jun chapter meeting, we have put M3, M4 and M5 together for an overview. We have discovered that if we fully engaged in a high level of listening, we are in presence. If we are in presence, our expression will be honest, authertic and best for the client's self-discovery and self-awareness.
Therefore, grounding ourself before any coaching session is important for both the coach and the client.
We practised grounding together and we found that there are three level of ground:
Level 1 - we relax our BODY
Level 2 - we clear our MIND
Level 3 - we calm our SOUL
Which level of presence are you in now?
Most people knows how to do the level 1 grounding. Do you have any idea on how to step up to level 2 and 3? One coach said, "Masterful coaching requires a life time to learn and practise."

Time flies..... Since the set up of the IAC HK Chapter in Oct 2007, we have altogether held 6 meetings. In the May Chapter meeting, we have given us an opportunity to review what we have done and what we want to do in the second half of the year.
- we have consistent meeting attendants but the number of participants monthly is still considered as low.
- we want to see the pool of attendants to increase, say one-fold double.
- the potential group could be Ive course and Gloria Hung course members..... said Lee
- we see there is opportunity to expand the meeting content from "examination and certification" to "Masteries Teaching Liscence"
- coaches who aim at attaining the IAC-CC designation by learning and ultizing the IAC Masteries are expected to have learned the basic coaching course. Otherwise, it will be difficult for new comers to catch up the deep essence of the IAC Masteries.
- coach who has target to get certified by end of the year could consider to give presentation at the Chapter meetings.
- we decided to change the meeting venue from Central to the Pacific Coffee Palor located at the Festival Walk of Kowloon Tong with effect from June 2008 meeting.
Percieving, Affirming and Expanding the Client's Potential
In Chinese culture, to acknowledge and appreciate a person's strength and potential verbally face to face is not an usual practice. Thus, most of the Chinese coaches found difficult to express themselves fully for Mastery #2. Some Chinese coaches may feel very unnatural to complimenting the client's potential and embarass to challenging one's limitation and assumption.
We had the discussion on the May 13 Chapter meeting on the above issue and learned how to tackle it effortlessly.
We have examine the deeper meaning of each key words of this mastery.
Percieving - acquires the coach to be highly conscious about his/her awareness on the client's strength and potential by being presence fully with multi-sensory attention towards the client. The coach is not required to purposely or artificially searching for the client's potential. Instead, his positive believing in the client's true potential, engaged sensing, observing and listening, a non-agenda and clean communication, mindfulness towards the subtle nuances of what the client said will naturally inter-woven a recognition of the client's unspoken potential.
Affirming - it is an important process to make sense and reinforce the client's self-reflection in aware of and truly recognize his/her own potential without doubt. Clarity empowers the client to look at himself/herself truly and then to take responsibility on his/her own choice to how to use the potential to deal with his/her life.
Expanding - In the 15 Proficiency, "Champion the Client" nicely partnership the "affirming" and "expanding" of the client's potential by asking coaching questions, "What does it mean to you?" "How does it relate to your life?"
In term of self-coaching, it could be rephased to "Understanding", "Believing" and "Articulating" one's own potential - said Benny Cheung.
If the coach discerns his/her own coaching being on Mastery #2 and be focus on the client than himself/herself, there should not be any cultural barrier in appreciating and complimenting the client's strength and potential verbally. Moreover, the coach could fully express his/her sensing about the client without hold back or fear of mistake.
Sometimes the client sees himself/herself not truely with an old belief or simply taking an ungrounding assumption due to various reasons. This part will be even more interesting and challenging for a coach to tackle. Tell me what and how will you coach?

by Lorraine Lee, IAC member (article from IAC VOICE April 2008 issue)
The highly anticipated time had come. Nine coaches from the Hong Kong IAC Chapter spent a weekend on an intensive practicum retreat to pursue the certification challenge. We hired Coach Bonnie Chan (IAC-CC and IAC Hong Kong chapter leader) as our mentor coach to support us on this journey. She picked the venue: the Agile Changjiang Hotel Resort & Golf Course in Zhong Shan, located on the southern part of the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong Province, China, about a 90-minute ferry ride from Hong Kong. The facility was lovely. We felt like were on a holiday getaway. I think this helped set the scene and mood for our group to experience relaxation, fun and loads of learning ahead!
We met once before the retreat so we could get an idea of what would happen. And as the discussions evolved over the weekend, I sensed the positive energy of the group filled with openness for sharing, interactions and feedback.
Through this intensive mentor and group coaching practicum we enjoyed the beauty of the Masteries and the art of masterful coaching. We were also learning more about the IAC and the road to certification. We practiced—and practiced more—with each other as we took turns being coach, coachee and observer. For many of us, it was the first time making session recordings—quite mind-boggling for the technically-challenged. It took courage to listen to those recordings and to be critiqued openly in a group. But the debriefings as well as the individual consultation with Coach Bonnie made it all worth while. (Read more about planning your own coaching retreat here.)
This group process helped each of us to explore our coaching uniqueness. We shared our favourite coaching questions. We identified our intended target markets and specialized areas of coaching like women executives, leadership coaching, transitional coaching and spiritual coaching. On a deeper level, we shared learning experiences such as greater self discovery, the powers of appreciation and expansion of client’s potential—which are all keys to empowerment.
We all had a glimpse of what masterful coaching is about. It seems light yet deep, and shifts are achievable within a short time. The most effective coaching at this higher level seems effortless and powerful.
As the retreat drew to an end, we as a group were more inspired, more confident of our knowledge and what we are able to achieve. The goal of IAC certification seems closer and more reachable now. With support from each other and our mentor coach, we know that our coaching journey will continue with greater enthusiasm, passion and success!
